Why Consumer Protection Commission is after Lagos surgeon, Dr Anu Fella, after failed plastic surgery

A popular plastic surgeon in Lagos Dr Anu Fella is presently in the eye of the storm after one of her recent surgeries turned awry. Fella of Med Contour Cosmetic Clinic in Lekki, Lagos, was recently accused by a popular Twitter user identified simply as Omohtee of allegedly performing a fake hip reduction surgery on her which she said has resulted in life-threatening complications.

Plastic surgery is a special type of surgery that alters a person's appearance and ability to function. The surgery is in two categories – the Reconstructive procedures which correct defects on the face or body and the Cosmetic procedures which alter a part of the body that a person is not satisfied with. Common cosmetic procedures include making the breasts and butt larger and it is very common among celebrities.

Media personality Toke Makinwa, Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh and cross-dresser Idris Okuneye aka Bobrisky lead the pack of Nigerian celebrities who have altered their body shape and have been vocal about their plastic procedures. In the past, some have also come out to share horror stories of their plastic surgeries after suffering dangerous consequences.

One of those who have suffered dangerous consequences from plastic surgery is Omohtee. A few weeks ago, she took to social media to disclose that she has been battling waist pain after undergoing a hips reduction surgery at Med Contour. In a video she shared online, she harped on the need for people to appreciate their body and also advised women who insist on undergoing plastic surgery to avoid Med Contour.

Omohtee also accused Dr Anu of blocking her on social media platforms after the alleged failed procedures. "If I die let it be known that Dr Anu of Med Contour killed me," she tweeted on Friday March 27. Her posts sparked outrage on social media as Nigerians called for the arrest of Dr Anu over allegations that she has been involved in several failed surgeries which has led to the death of one of her patrons in the past.

In her reaction to Omohtee's accusations, Dr Anu wrote on her Instagram page: "So apparently my offence is that her waist is too tiny. At the expense of another person's name and profession some people just want their posts to trend…this is really sad. I leave this lady to God..let God's will be done."

In the past, there have been several accusations of failed plastic surgeries carried out by Dr Anu Fella which led to complications. In March 2019, Dr Anu reportedly fled to Jamaica after the death of a former beauty queen, Onwuzuligbo Nneka Miriam due to complications from a failed liposuction surgery at Med Contour.

According to information on medcontour.org, Liposuction, the removal of fat, costs between N800,000 and N1.2 million. On the website of Grandville Medical and Laser, another popular cosmetic clinic in Nigeria, Breast lift costs N1 million, Breast augmentation with implants costs N1.3m. Grandville Medical and Laser also came under criticisms in 2019 when a lady died of complications emanating from a liposuction surgery at the facility in Abuja.

Following Omohtee's accusation and the public outrage, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) swung into action and launched an open investigation into the practices of Med Contour, its promoter, associates and employees.

According to a statement by FCCPC's Chief Executive Officer, Babatunde Irukera, the agency became aware of complaints and dissatisfaction with respect to certain elective/cosmetic surgical procedures carried out by Med Contour.

"The allegations are that Med Contour engages in conduct that is considered otherwise unprofessional, misleading and potentially injurious, including resulting in possible fatalities," Irukera said.

"FCCPC will gather additional information from consumers with previous experiences with Med Contour or its operatives, whether the experiences were satisfactory or otherwise, and from persons who have any such relevant information, including about the experiences of others.

He added: "The commission, therefore, requests credible information in this regard in the form of a concise narrative of facts including the identity of the Med Contour operatives the interactions occurred with information should be sent to failedcosmeticsurgery@fccpc.gov.ng,"

Barely 24 hours after opening an investigation into the activities of Dr Anu Fella, FCCPC, on Wednesday, sealed Med Contour's facility in Lekki.

"In furtherance of an open investigation, on reasonable suspicion of illegal activities (S.18(1) FCCPA), FCCPC today sealed Med Contour in an abundance of caution & consumer safety pending further inquiry," FCCPC said on Wednesday.

The whereabouts of Dr Anu Fella is presently unknown as multiple reports say she is presently on the run following FCCPC's investigation into her practices.
